Tips on chatting to strangers

You get numerous opportunities to talk while traveling- ask for directions, ask for suggestions, and ask for experience. However, if you're sky and inexperienced, you probably don't have the gut to talk to strangers around you. Plus, you probably don't know where to start the conversation. Here is one trick: Draw the attention of others and make them want to start the opener by themselves. This will solve all the problems since you're now worry free about which topics to initiate a conversation. All you need to do is replying correctly and keep the conversation going. But, what can you do make people nearby to talk to you?

Here are some tricks:

Be helpful and polite:
Remember: One never say no to the innocent helpers. I saw an old lady dragging her huge luggage rushing toward the incoming train and, as the only young guy available at the moment, I volunteer to upload her luggage onto the train. After she expressed her gratitude, we naturally start to chat on random topics. She turns out to be an experienced tour guide around the world and shared with me her trips to Africa, China, Europe and even Antarctic.

Me: Antarctic, where is that?
Old lady: Antarctic is the south pole, the opposite of Arctic.
Me: Ohhhh... why tourists are interested in visiting Antarctic? It must be freaking cold out there.
Old lady: Penguins and dolphins. No bears, though.

Bring crazy stuffs with you:
On my way back home from Vegas trip, I carried the insane 100 oz bottle on my shoulder. Three funny anecdotes occurred.

During the flight, the flight attendant was obviously shocked by the bottle.
Attendant: Do you want to fill this bottle up with coke?
Me: Vodka with coke, please.

On the air train, an old guy came in and stared at my bottle
Old Grandpa: You must had a lot of fun with this. BUT, can you remember?
Me: Hahahahaha...

On the train back, one of the ticket checker pointed at the bottle and talked to his partner
Ticket Checker: I think he found my shot glass
Me: Sorry, that's my shot glass sir. I drank two or three shots per day to keep my awake

Bring high tech gadgets with you:
Nowadays, everybody loves newly-released products. The curiosity triggers the conversations. While I was playing around with my iPad2 in the plane, a middle age guy next to me start the conversation and he turns out to be a high-tech fan.

High-tech guy: How do you like your iPad2? I've ordered one yesterday.
Me: Yeah, it's pretty easy and convenient to use.

Later on, he showed me his iPad 1 and Pandora made by Motorola. We exchange ideas about the performance of each pad from difference companies and compared the pros and cons of each type. The conversation lasted for an hour or so. His wife also joined the conversation along the way and treated me and my friend her homemade cookies.

如何利用字首字根背單字

學習字首字根是要花時間的,而且有一定的困難度,底下我把
一些一般常見的困難點列出,以及相對應的解決之道.

Difficulties for beginners in the field of etymology are:
1. Spending extra time to memorize prefixes, roots and suffixes.
Before studying etymology, learners won't care about the meaning of "pro" since this is not even a word. Right now, learners have to worry about how to memorize the prefixes, roots and suffixes in conjunction with the already cumbersome new words.

Solution 1: Start from an easy word
Whenever I encounter a new prefix, root or suffix, I will pick a known word containing the new etymology part to start with. For example, to memorize the root "gress", I do have several choices to start with:"progress, regress and transgress." However, I will choose the one I know (in this case, "progress") to connect the meaning of "gress" to meaning of "progress". In this way, I gain the benefits of acquiring these prefixes, roots or suffixes with minimum effort.

In a nutshell,
1. Target a new etymology part: Let it be a prefix, a root or a suffix.
Ex: "gress" = walk
2. List out several words containing the target.
Ex: Progress, regress, transgress.
3. Choose the one that's most familiar to you
Ex: Progress
4. Connect the meaning of Progress to root "gress"
Progress= pro + gress = forward + walk
= 向前 + 走 = 向前走 = 進步
5. Pick up all the other words
Regress = Re + gress = back + walk
= 向後 + 走 = 向後走 = 退步
Transgress = Trans + gress = cross + walk = go beyond the boundary of
= 穿越 + 走 = 逾越

Comments: 仔細的看一下中文解釋,會發現其實在中文和英文是有很大的雷同的,只是英文是把所有字義塞在同一個字裡面,中文則是分開成兩三個字(characters).
進(pro)+步(gress)
退(re)+步(gress)
逾(cross)+越(gress)
Difficulty 2. Multiple variations of one prefixes, roots or suffixes.
After studying etymology for a while, you will find the inconvenient truth that "grad" has the same meaning of "gress". This is not the worst one. Groups like

fac, fec, fect, fic, fy,feit or leg, lect, lex, lig are the killers that scare the beginners away

Solution 2: All the variations sounds alike
When I was a newbie to etymology, the fact that "fac, fec, fect, fic, fy, feit" is actually one root get me confused and then I started to think about why there are so many variations of one root. My conclusion so far is: to make a word easy to pronounce.

Let me list several word with root fac/fect/fic
fac: fact, factory, factor.
fect: defect, effect.
fic: fictitious, efficacious.

See any clue here? The longer the word, the lighter the vowel . Vowel goes from
a --> e --> i --> o --> u as the words prolong. After all, it's impossible to pronounce a long word with many a's in it

簡單來說,同樣的字首字根,"聽"起來都差不多,只是輕重的問題而已,像是fac,fec,fic,只要把母音a, e, i, o, u看成一樣的

fac --> fxc (好像在罵髒話,XD)
fec --> fxc
fic --> fxc

就不難發現,他們其實真的都是表兄弟姊妹.要一起記憶也就不會那麼困難,那麼的突兀了.

Shy Ronnie & Clyde

[Rihanna sings:]
"Eh, whoa, yeah, yeah, yeah. Rihanna. Shy Ronnie.
We are like Fire and ice taking over the whole world.
From the mountain tops down to the boys and girls.
And the tree of knowledge it grows because we plant the seeds.
We the teachers of this and we got just what you need. Shy Ronnie..."

[Shy Ronnie mumbles]

[Rihanna:]
"Speak up. Shy Ronnie, speak up."

[Shy Ronnie still mumbles]

[Rihanna:]
"OK, I'll take it from here.
OK, we are like Fire and ice taking over the whole world.
From the mountain tops down to the boys and girls.
Hit 'em Shy Ronnie!"

[Shy Ronnie still mumbles, makes a mic feedback noise.]

[Rihanna:]
"No. Move the mic away from your face.
C'mon, this beat cost a lot of money.
Oh, no. Oh, no.
He pissed himself. He pissed himself.
Oh, boy. Should've just payed Kanye.
Bye Shy Ronnie. Bye Bye."

[She leaves and then Shy Ronnie sings out.]

[Rihanna:]
I'm back, forgot my purse. Bye, bye again."
[Shy Ronnie mumbles again]

And at your funeral ya momma gon' cry.
So customers kiss the floor floor,
And clerks open cash drawers slow, slow.
If you don’t wanna end up dead,
You do everything Shy Ronnie says!
Tell them Ronnie!

Rihanna:
No one in the bank can hear you,
Shy Ronnie use your outside voice!
We don’t have time for this!
Let’s go!
So stay on the ground its a stick up, stick up!
Your wallets and jewels we'll pick up, pick up!
Unload the cash, move your ass,
We gettin money, tell them Shy Ronnie!
Please, please use your words!

Wrong Hole

Hey Champ,
Why the long face?
I don't know, Scott. I really screwed up last night.
Come on, talk to me, tell me what happened.
Okay, I will try.

I took her on a date things seemed so bright

I knew I would not need my youporn tonight

We go to her place and we fooled around

We throw all our clothes to the ground

We begin as she turns out the lights

I start but feel something so very extra tight

I hear her cry and I see her frown

I look at the condom it is all brown

Last night I stuck it in the wrong hole

I'm so sorry from the bottom of my soul

Cause I stuck it in the wrong hole

Try some preparation H it'll make you feel better

In my defense those holes are so close together

Oh baby baby don't feel defiled

It's a common accident during doggy style

It was so dark I couldn't see so good

I had no idea where I put my wood

I want to make things better want to make it alright

If you want you can put on a strap on and give it back to me all night ( I'd rather if she

didn't)

Last night I stuck it in the wrong hole

I'm so sorry from the bottom of my soul

I never ever want to make you feel hurting

I guess that's why God made that hole not for inserting

Tell me how you feel baby please don't pause

Now I know how they feel in that HBO show OZ

Maybe take some advit your pain it will fix

From the way you are walking you can compete in the special Olympics

If this was Alabama we would be on trial

That's how my mom took my temperature when I was a child

I've got a confession and I think you wont mind

I kinda liked when you put it in my behind

I don't know baby I'm no Sodomite

Can't we just try it again tonight?

Alright!

Every night I stick it in the wrong hole

It's so much fun and we don't need no birth control

When we stick it in the wrong hole.

I stuck in your ass.

Writing Exercise May Lessen Performance Anxiety's Effects

From 60-second Science

http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode.cfm?id=writing-exercise-may-lessen-perform-11-01-13

Writing Exercise May Lessen Performance Anxiety's Effects
通篇文章是因果論述 -- 因: 寫下對考試(表演)的顧慮 ; 果: 較佳的表現
但是因為這只是單一科學實驗的結果,所以可性度並非100%. 這也是為什麼理面加上了一個助動詞"May."來表示不確定性

Students who addressed their performance anxiety in a writing exercise prior to an exam improved their scores, whereas other students who did not engage in the exercise saw their results drop.

這是一個用對比手法寫出的平行對稱句子
看到whereas,知道前後兩句立場相反(對比)

who addressed their performance in a writing exercise <=> who did not engage in th exercise
improved their results <=> saw their results drop

Performance anxiety can be crippling. Entertainers who suffer from it come up with creative defenses. Bono has his purple shades. The indie rock singer Cat Power faces away from the audience. Others turn to more standard solutions like Xanax.

先用舉例說明的方式,介紹一般表演者面對演出壓力的旁門左道

General statement: Entertainers who suffer from it come up with creative defenses.

Examples: Purple shades, facing away from the audience, using Xanax.

But there might be a healthier quick fix: writing.

帶入主題句: a healthier quick fix: writing.

Because new research reveals that writing about your specific worries just before a performance can reduce the risk of blowing it due to anxiety. The work appears in the journal Science.

主要原因

Researchers gave 20 students two math tests. The students did nothing special before the first test. But before the second test, students were told they’d receive money for high marks. Half of the students were then instructed to take 10 minutes and write down any concerns they had about the test. The other half sat quietly. Those who just sat waiting did 12 percent worse on the second test than on the first. But those who wrote about their fears showed a five percent improvement on the exam.

解釋實驗過程:把學生分成兩組分別進行兩次的數學測驗,在考試前十分鐘,要求其中一組寫下他們對考試的擔憂,另外一組則靜靜的等待.結果被要求手寫的學生們獲得較好的成績.

Another part of the research found that writing in general didn’t work—it had to be about test-related concerns to trigger the effect.

給顧忌更清楚的定義.

另外部分的實驗結果顯示,唯有寫下針對考試相關的顧忌才有用.

So to write may prevent some wrongs.

最後的結論利用了Write 和 Right的諧音,做了一個俏皮的雙關.

這是很標準的英文寫作方式,仔細看,從大標題,副標題,主題句,到發展論述全部在講同樣的東西,差別只是在於講述的內容深淺,從淺到深,從廣泛到精細.

大標題

Writing Exercise May Lessen Performance Anxiety's Effects

副標題

Students who addressed their performance anxiety in a writing exercise prior to an exam improved their scores, whereas other students who did not engage in the exercise saw their results drop.

主題句

But there might be a healthier quick fix: writing. Because new research reveals that writing about your specific worries just before a performance can reduce the risk of blowing it due to anxiety.

發展

Those who just sat waiting did 12 percent worse on the second test than on the first. But those who wrote about their fears showed a five percent improvement on the exam.

從新看一遍以後,有印證了嗎?從頭到尾,講的內容都是同樣的一件事,這就是所謂的統一性(Unity),不過講述的方式和內容是由淺到深,模糊到清楚,循序漸進引導著讀者的思路,這就是所謂的連貫性(Coherence).

最後再簡單的把內容總結一下 (還是在講同樣的東西)

So to write may prevent some wrongs.

Performance anxiety can be crippling. Entertainers who suffer from it come up with creative defenses. Bono has his purple shades. The indie rock singer Cat Power faces away from the audience. Others turn to more standard solutions like Xanax.

But there might be a healthier quick fix: writing. Because new research reveals that writing about your specific worries just before a performance can reduce the risk of blowing it due to anxiety.
